An explanation that returns again and again in this archive, usually once the prowler has vanished. Mattoon, 1944. Public health commissioner Thomas V. Wright put the Mad Gasser down to mass hysteria, and Donald M. Johnson published a field study of the case in that light a year later. In Uttar Pradesh in 2002, epidemiologist Timothy F. Jones gave the Muhnochwa face-scratcher the same name. In Malawi in 2017, the Society of Medical Doctors diagnosed it in the bloodsucker scare, while Sri Lanka's government blamed the 2011 grease devil panic on it.
