Project Sign file, combined PDF

NICAP / USAF · 38 pages · text by OCR

This combined Project Sign file, drawn from USAF records, documents the 1 October 1948 encounter over Fargo, North Dakota, in which Air National Guard pilot 2nd Lt. George F. Gorman chased a small round white light in his F-51 for 27 minutes. The file holds checklists, interrogation reports by Major Paul Kubala of the ATI Field Office at Wright-Patterson, tower witness statements, Geiger readings on the aircraft and press clippings. It concludes that Gorman's statements should be accepted as truth until proven wrong.

178th Fighter Squadron Air National Guard Fargo, North Dakota

Gentlemen:

Attention: Maj. D. Jones

The object in question was first noticed just east of the airport, and appeared to be on a north heading. After passing to the east of the airport it seemed to take up a northwest heading. The object seemed to be at about two thousand feet and appeared to be traveling at quite an excessive speed compared to a Piper Cub that was east of the field at the time. No definite outline could be identified. Both objects were noticed at the same time.
