Unidentified Flying Objects: Project "Grudge" (Technical Report No. 102-AC 49/15-100)

US Air Force, Air Materiel Command · 1949-08 · 413 pages · text by OCR

This August 1949 technical report from the US Air Force Air Materiel Command presents Project Grudge's investigation of unidentified flying objects through January 1949. Drawing on consultants including Dr. J. A. Hynek, Rand Corporation, the Air Weather Service and Dr. P. M. Fitts, it explains most of 244 incidents as balloons, aircraft, astronomical phenomena, hoaxes or psychological errors. It concludes the objects pose no direct threat to national security and recommends reducing the investigation in scope.

Dear Colorel Fustrot:

In reply to your inquiry of March 21th, we had not planned to issue a formal report on project bridge until or unless our study leads to some unusual or unexpected find which would throw new light on bridge.

We are now working through the area in search of significant correlations or other indirect bits of evidence. It is expected that we shall have explored all our various avenues of attack in about two months. To date we have found nothing which would seriously controvert simple rational explanations of the various phenomena in terms of balloons, conventional aircraft, planets, meteors, bits of radar, optical illusions, practical jokes, psychopathological reports, and the like.

We should like to take this opportunity to raise a few problems. (1) The file on incident 20 contains a photograph which apparently belongs with incident 10. In this case correct* (2) The file on incident 162 was obtained from the data. (3) We have board from a reliable source of an incident in which fishermen observed flying objects which dropped that material when they collected and subsequentlyawn to official investigators. The investigators' plans created but there was a survivor. We do not seem to have a file or this incident - certainly not a complete file. They no have any

Sincerely yours.
