This August 1949 technical report from the US Air Force Air Materiel Command presents Project Grudge's investigation of unidentified flying objects through January 1949. Drawing on consultants including Dr. J. A. Hynek, Rand Corporation, the Air Weather Service and Dr. P. M. Fitts, it explains most of 244 incidents as balloons, aircraft, astronomical phenomena, hoaxes or psychological errors. It concludes the objects pose no direct threat to national security and recommends reducing the investigation in scope.
# UNCLASSIFIED Insignificant yCU0, a, b, c = Proposed City, California — 17 October 1643 This volcanic has no astronomical explanation. although the four observers had no yearlong training, their reports are remarkably consistent. The object was in slight several aluates, too long to be a meteor; it coiled a backing turn of 46° and appeared to reflect sunlight very strongly. The speed was great but not excessive. The object seen could have been an adrertial; blit, a bal- loon, or an aircraft. The backing turn appears to rule out the bal- loon, unless this was a subjective impression caused by the burnin- of the balloon in the wind.
