This August 1949 technical report from the US Air Force Air Materiel Command presents Project Grudge's investigation of unidentified flying objects through January 1949. Drawing on consultants including Dr. J. A. Hynek, Rand Corporation, the Air Weather Service and Dr. P. M. Fitts, it explains most of 244 incidents as balloons, aircraft, astronomical phenomena, hoaxes or psychological errors. It concludes the objects pose no direct threat to national security and recommends reducing the investigation in scope.
Incident v172, a, b, e -- Farne, North Leicote -- 1 October 1947 There is no conceivable astronomical explanation for this much-examined and much-discussed incident. Analyses by a psychologist and a meteorological expert would be of importance here. In some significant to this investigator that other witnesses of the incident did not assume the complex tactics reported by Lieutenant Jerven, although they were presumably aware; the same thing, so it appears, that the pilot "sook on" a limited weather tailpan! (Go report on incident 20: for further discussion.)
