Unidentified Flying Objects: Project "Grudge" (Technical Report No. 102-AC 49/15-100)

US Air Force, Air Materiel Command · 1949-08 · 413 pages · text by OCR

This August 1949 technical report from the US Air Force Air Materiel Command presents Project Grudge's investigation of unidentified flying objects through January 1949. Drawing on consultants including Dr. J. A. Hynek, Rand Corporation, the Air Weather Service and Dr. P. M. Fitts, it explains most of 244 incidents as balloons, aircraft, astronomical phenomena, hoaxes or psychological errors. It concludes the objects pose no direct threat to national security and recommends reducing the investigation in scope.

incident (Incident No. 17). Host were distributed without pattern throughout the United States. A few were outside the U.S. To two descriptions of appearance or performance were exactly alike. The reported sightings occurred at various times of day and year.

## VII. Relationship Between Publicity and Lates of Reports

The following graph (Fig. 1) illustrates an apparent relation ship between reports which received wide publicity and the total number of reports. It is believed this has been carried to a sufficient degree to allow the conclusion that many reports are the direct result of such publicity.

This was further illustrated recently, when this Command received 64 reports of sightings and 51 possible solutions following a Saturday Evening Post article and an official press release on the subject of flying objects. Virtually all of the reporters and correspondents made reference to one of the above mentioned articles.
