This August 1949 technical report from the US Air Force Air Materiel Command presents Project Grudge's investigation of unidentified flying objects through January 1949. Drawing on consultants including Dr. J. A. Hynek, Rand Corporation, the Air Weather Service and Dr. P. M. Fitts, it explains most of 244 incidents as balloons, aircraft, astronomical phenomena, hoaxes or psychological errors. It concludes the objects pose no direct threat to national security and recommends reducing the investigation in scope.
## UNCLASSIFIED Incident g112,a-f --- Ashley and Lalmaro, Ohio --- 8 April 1940 (Superoxides interim report of 2/16/49) From the descriptions given by the various observers — not only that the object seen appeared like a clearly-outlined, aloud, fleesy white, moved slowly and untainted shape, was a long vertical cylinder — one can surmise that there is a strong possibility that the object was nothing more than a short, vertical, daytime meteor trail. These trails are known to persist for half an hour or more, and to drift with prevailing winds aloft. The fact that one observer stated that at first the cylinder resembled sky writing is excellent corroboration for the above explanation.
