Unidentified Flying Objects Reports

Defense Intelligence Agency · 140 pages · text by OCR

This Defense Intelligence Agency release gathers Army and Air Force intelligence reports on unidentified flying objects from several countries. It contains translated Finnish Border Guard reports of glowing spheres and lights seen near the Soviet border, a Costa Rica sighting near Puntarenas, and Afghan news items from 1959 on bright objects over Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul. Other reports describe objects over Kuldja in Sinkiang, China. A 1969 OSI report from Nakhon Phanom, Thailand concludes that a pilot's ground sighting was probably a religious procession carrying ceremonial drums.

(U) This report concerns information condensed from two news articles from the Surabaja press, one in English and the other translated into English from the original. Both news articles are on the same subject, namely, objects falling from aircraft performing acrobatics and efforts on the part of AURI to dispel apprehensions of Surabaja populace that enemy aircraft are being shot down.
1. (U) Capt SUMAKNO, Deputy Commander of Squadron 3 at his Headquarters in PERAK AFB, Surabaja, said during a press interview that Squadron 3 is training a number of young pilots in certain skills, including so-called acrobatic flying. During training flights over Surabaja, parts of the planes have fallen off and were found by people in the villages. This is not unusual, the Captain said, and people should not worry about it. Capt SUMAKNO and Capt UMAR, an officer from Operations Wing 002, both said there are aircraft training over Surabaja every day by pilots who have just graduated from the AURI Aviation Academy to become fighter pilots.
