CURRENT INTELLIGENCE WEEKLY SUMMARY
_,-_ ,-\
SOUTH VIETNAM
Government operations in
South Vietnam during the past
week inflicted some casualties
on the Viet Cong by strafing
and bombing but failed to trap
sizable forces, In Quang Ngai
Province, where two Viet Cong
groups totaling more than
1,800 had been reported,the
first major helicopter troop
movements in the northern part
of the country'wereconducted
last weekend; government ground
forces made contact with only one
enemy company northwest of the
town of Quang Ngai. In the south-
ern provinces, Viet Cong military
action continued at its normally
high level. Throughout the
country, however, Communist
activity of all types dropped
during the week ending 12 March
to 406 incidents from the pre-
vious week's high of 552.
There aretentative reports
of enemy airdrops in an area
southwest of Pleiku, near the
Cambodian border. On the night
of 19-20 March a joint US - South
Vietnamese radar station at
P1eikupicked1q>unidentified
aircraft apparently making air»
drops in the vicinity of Route
19; the following night the
:station noted additional planes,ac
companied by fighters, making
drops in the same area. The
aircraft are said to have left
in the direction of Cambodia.
Such flights would constitute
the first firm evidence of bloc
airdrop support. South Viet-
namese officials apparently
accept the validity of the
reports.
Hanoi continues to show a
desire for an international
conference on Vietnam and to
exhibit some impatience with
the USSR's failure to move in
that direction. In a letter
to the Geneva cochairmen on
l6 March, North Vietnam's
foreign minister called on them
to hold consultations amongthe
countries concerned. North
Vietnamese editorial comment
on the letter pointed out that
it was nearly the twentieth
time that Hanoi had found it
necessary to report to the
cochairmen on US activities in
the South.
