This is the printed transcript of an April 5, 1966 hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services on unidentified flying objects. Air Force Secretary Harold Brown testified that 9,501 of 10,147 sightings from 1947 through 1965 had been identified and that no threat or extraterrestrial evidence had been found. The record includes the Scientific Advisory Board ad hoc committee report recommending university studies and the Air Force's marsh gas explanation for the Dexter and Hillsdale, Michigan sightings. FLYING
OBJECTS
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
COMMITTEE
ON
ARMED
SERVICES,
Washington,
D.0
.,
Tuesday, April
5,
1966.
The
committee
met,
pursuant
to
call,
at
10:35
a.m.,
the
Honorable
L.
Mendel
Rivers
(chairman
of
the
committee),
presiding.
The
CHAIRMAN.
Let
the
committee
come
to order.
Members
of
the
committee,
Secretary
Brown
and
General
McCon-
nell
are
back
this
morning
for the
purpose
of
responding
to
questions.
At
the
end
of our
last
hearing
I
asked that Secretary
Brown
give
us
some
information with
respect
to
unidentified flying
objects.
I
under-
stand that
he
is
prepared
to
do
that
this
morning and
I
also
understandthat
he
has
with
him Dr.
J.
Allen
Hynek,
consultant to
Project
Blue
Book,
which
is
the
group
charged with
responsibility
with
respect
to
UFO's.
Also
present
this
morning
is
Maj.
Hector
Quintanilla,
Jr.,
UFO
project
officer.
I
think
it
would
be
well to
get the
UFO
business
out of
the
way
first.
So
I
will
ask
Dr.
Brown
to
give
us
his
report
at
this
time.
Mr.
Secretary,
see if
you can
shed
some
light
on
these
highly
illumi-
nated
objects.
We
can't just
write
them
off.
There
are
too
many
responsible
people
who
are concerned.
Mr.
Ford
has
come
out,
he
has
a
pretty
good
size
stature
in the
Con-
gress,
and
so
tell
me
what
you
know, Mr.
Secretary,
and
let's
see
if
we
can
have
some
answers.
Go
ahead,
Mr.
Secretary.
Secretary
BROWN. Mr.
Chairman,
I
have
a
letter
here
which
is
ad-dressed to
you,
and
I
signed
it.
Let
me
run through
it
quickly, because
it
summarizes
pretty well
what
our views
are
on
unidentified flyingobjects.
Following
that,
if
there are
some
questions,
I
can
try to
answer them,
or the Chief, or
Dr. Hynek,
or
Major
Quintanilla.
The CHAIRMAN.
Why
don't
we
have
the doctor
come up
to the
table
now,
because
when we
start
asking
questions
we
will
have
him
there,
and
we
will
just
go
all
over the board.
Sit at the
end
of the
table,
Doctor.
Go
ahead,
sir.
