Appendix "A" to D/DC33-1-66 dated 31 Jan 67 STATEMENT Mr. Robert Gauthier of Riviere Nova, Abitibi (10 miles west of Matirlic on Route 59) Telephone No. 815-2491 — at 1438 hrs 30 Jan 67 — states, I closed my gas station around 1230 a.m. on the 27 Jan 67 then I went to bed. Around 1245 a.m., while I was in bed, I heard a big explosion which shook the house. I thought it was the furnace which had exploded. I looked towards the lake whilst it was still moonlight, and I saw a black spot. The same morning around 0745 a.m. I went and saw the black spot in question. The hole in the ice was approximately 12" to 15" in diameter. I examined this hole in the ice with a bar, and it appears that the hole was dug in the ice at an angle of 45 degrees and came from the direction of north-west. The hole in the ice was not there previously. I notified the Provincial Police. The hole is approximately 20 - 25 feet from the beach, which is on my property. Signed... Robert Gauthier.
